Now that the weather has finally broke in Michigan my daughter and I decided to take a walk to see what we could find. She also decided to take her “camera”… which is a little square mirror. Hey, I am cheap and she has fun with it so I am just going to let it role. But since she came up with the idea I figured I should bring my real camera along.
The first thing we found were the storm drains at the school across the road. The drains were still full of water, so we had to drop something in to see it splash. Trying to be the adult, I said that we could only drop one small rock/stick in… each. Honestly it is still fun to drop things in storm drains.
We then found a bunch of sticks laying around the base of a large maple. My daughter then decided that we needed to go back to the house to get a ladder and some duct tape so that we could put them back in the tree. I will not relate the whole five minute conversation convincing her that we did not need to do that. I will say I was very proud of my final analogy comparing getting your hair cut, and branches falling out after a storm. Not perfect, but it worked.
We also found a really cool oak with lichen. The tree was a lot of fun to feel. Very bumpy. Trying to explain lichen to a toddler was less fun. In the end there was less science, and more “it’s that stuff” but we both left happy.
After that it was a lot of running and chasing but not many photos… I need to remember to take photos. What a great spring day.
