As a parent, there are many lessons that I want to teach my children. Some are very important; don’t go with strangers, don’t run in the middle of the street, etc. Others are not life threatening but still important; brush your teeth, don’t pick your nose. Some, like what to do with someone who is TOO friendly, just pop up.
We again found Eastern Pondhawks on the wing. For some reason we only got good photos of the green females again this year.
My family was going on a walk a few days ago. Halfway through our route we found some flowers that were so stunning that they stopped us in our tracks.
I have been meaning to post something for months. As I logged in tonight, I realized that it has been exactly a year since my last post. I know a lot of my mental block has been the loss of…
Spring is blooming all around us. As we have been walking around with the kids we like to teach them the names of some of the flowers we walk past. Somethings like Sweet Williams are really just common garden flowers, but they hold special childhood memories for me. They always make me think of my mom. We have some Common Sage that we planted last year as an annual, but wintered over and is a beautiful bush.
On tonight’s walk we saw a few wild rabbits. Since we have two giant buns at home, the kids love to see wild rabbits on the run. It is hard to get close to them with the kids. They are not very sneaky.
Tonight, while on our family walk, we discovered some mutant dandelions. We had the perfect combination of the school not mowing the lawn, and the dandelions going to seed. We noticed the stem of one of the dandelions was actually a fusion of two.
On today’s walk the kids found a Garter snake. First, I was proud of the kids for seeing it on their own. Second, I was proud that they kept their distance while looking at it, while not reacting with fear. It is nice to know that they actually listen. We got a great view of this cool reptile. After we gave it a little room, it went from the lawn to the woods. The kids really wanted to follow, but they restrained themselves.
We are lucky enough to live minutes away from a 4,481 acres park that not only offers wooded trails to walk on, but also a little farm. Now that the weather has broken, we try to go there as often as we can. One day this week my daughter only had a half day at school, so we took the opportunity to pack as much adventure into the day as possible.
