My go-to bike for winter days (or honestly most days anymore) is my 2007 Raleigh One Way. While I think the heyday of the single/fixed gear bike has passed, I have so many miles on this bike I can’t imagine my life without it. I picked this bike up second hand, and have spent the last five years changing it into “my” commuter. I love the fixed gear for light slush and ice. If my rear wheel breaks free I know right away.
On the other hand, if the snow gets really deep the One Way can get bogged down and leave me wishing I had a few more gears to shift down… on the other, other hand I have more than once tried to pretend I meant to do a really sweet track-stand on the side of the road. It is a lot easier if your wheels are propped up with snow.
