On tonight’s walk we decided to play a little Canyon Ball. While this is a lot of fun for the kids, I decided to bring along something for my to play with too. I dug out on of my old slings. I started using a sling (think David and Goliath) back when I was sixteen. At one time I was actually very accurate with one. That was years ago, and I haven’t used one regularly for years.
A few weeks back we upgraded the Canyon Balls to three matching Tennis Ball. While tennis balls are less than ideal ammo, they will work. So I took turns throwing each kids ball while they ran to catch it. [Don’t worry, everyone was standing out of misfire range while I was throwing]. It was not a big surprise that the kids wanted to give it a try after a little bit. So I let each one try it a few times. My 6 year old daughter was actually pretty good for a beginner.
After an interlude of returning a chubby Chihuahua to it’s owners, we decided to pack up the balls and finish our walk. The fates of adventure were with us though and we found an abandoned soccer ball by the soccer nets. This meant that we all had to take turns scoring a goal, and being the goalie. I know very little about soccer, but enough to bluff a 3 year old. In the end we left the ball there for the owner to find, but it was a fun part of our walk.
We had a really good philosophical conversation about why we could not keep the Chihuahua or the ball. I think we might make slings and soccer part of our walk routine. Unfortunately the soccer ball is a little harder to carry than the sling but we will see what happens.
