For Christmas, a friend got me a bunch of new types of tea to try. My favorite was a box of Girnar Kesari Masala (Spice) Tea. While I like some Chia, the blend of ginger, pepper and Cardamom (heavy on the Cardamom) was really great. After buying a few boxes of teabags, I decided to look for some loose leaf. I got really excited when I found a bag online for a really good price.
So in the glow of finding a great deal I ordered a 2 pound bag of Girnar Kesari Premium Assam Tea. Now there are two problems here. First, though it is in the same orange package with the cool lion head logo, I didn’t realize I was ordering Premium Assam no. 3 Tea, and not Premium Assam with Spices. Second, though I have been drinking tea for years, I did not think about how much would be in two pounds.
After experimenting I figured out that I could make a great pot (approx. 6.5 cups) with about 2 teaspoons of leaves. Properly timed, I actually can brew three great pots on the same leaves. What I ended up with is some really good CTC (Cut, Tear, Curl) Assam Tea. While this new tea is not as delicate as some of the Chinese teas that I drink, it is a great tea for when I am home all day drinking cup after cup.
After a three pots day using only two teaspoons of leaves I feel very economical. I also don’t feel guilty about throwing the teabags away. While I always compost them, I do enjoy not having those little strings show up in my garden. When I am done with my two pounds, I might buy another big bag.
