This week we had a lot of rain. We didn’t get many chances to get out and explore. Fortunately, we found some Honey Bee action on our deck. At first the kids were a little worried about the wings and stingers, but once we started talking about honey they were on board. Then they found it fun to see how the cucumbers get pollinated!
The bees slowly hovered around the deck between rain showers. We tried to guess which flower they would land on next. More often than not, we were wrong, but it was still fun to try. It wasn’t until we looked at the photos that we saw how much pollen was in the bees pollen baskets. They were very good workers.
It was also cool to see the blossoms next the young fruit. The kids have watched shows about the bees before. They know the idea about how nectar becomes honey, and flowers become fruit, but it is something else to see it in real life. The rain kept us close to the house, but it also let the kids see how our cucumbers get pollinated, and how they grow into food. That is actually a big adventure for little kids.
