Today, September 29th, is the Feast of the Archangels. Historically known as Michaelmas.
In the tradition that I was raised, that means Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael (sorry Uriel and the rest of the gang). I have always felt it was an exciting feast day, because when else can we celibate a warrior, a herald/preacher, and a healer all at one time? These are the core elements of most of my childhood fantasies, and I don’t think I am alone.
With maybe the exception of St Christopher, I can’t think of another Saint who’s medal is worn by more Christians and non-Christians. But anyone who can fight the devil with a lance and win is totally the boss. St. Michael give me the courage to fight the good fight.
On the other hand I love that Gabriel, the non warrior, strikes fear into the prophet Daniel, causes Zechariah to be struck dumb, a convinces both Mary and Joseph of the divinity of Jesus and to embrace his birth. What does that say about the power of speech? Words and dreams have power, St Gabriel help me to use them wisely.
I truly morn for those who do not include the Book of Tobit in their Bible. I will probably post later about why I feel this may be the greatest tale in the Old Testament, but for today I want to say that St Raphael is not only the healer, but the greatest friend. St. Raphael, please walk by me like you did Tobias. Help me to be a good husband, to heal my family and friends, and to listen to the word of god even when it does not make sense at the time.
I pray that we are all blessed on this Michaelmas, and with the guidance of all God’s Angels that we make this world truly His kingdom.
