Today is the Feast of St. Martin of Tours, a traditional day of transition. In the Middle Ages this was the time for women to move their work indoors, and men from the field to the forest. I feel that I am moving into a proverbial wood as I start this blog. What a great day to start something new!
In one of the early conversation of our marriage, my wife and I decided that we wanted to celebrate some of the feast days of the Roman Calendar in our home. We wanted to make Holy Days of Obligation more than just an “obligation”, and celebrate the feasts of the saints that hold a special place in our hearts. I also wanted to observe the older feasts that have faded to the pages of books like Martinmas, Candlemas, and Michaelmas. So today we said a prayer to St. Martin, had some great roast beef and asparagus, thanked God for all we have.
