About three weeks ago, I lost my mother. She had diminishing health over the last few year, but it was still a surprise. No matter when or where it would have happened I know I would not have been ready. It is a major loss in my life.
A few years ago, a friend told me about Charles de Foucauld. At that time he was considered “blessed” in the Catholic Church because of the life he lived and the fact that he was martyred for the faith.
Grandfather, Great Mysterious One,
You have been always
and before You nothing has been.
I would like to wish all of the Mother’s of the world, past, present and future, a Happy Mother’s Day. I will say a prayer for you tonight.
Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
This year I was lucky enough to get one of the few seats available for a lay person to attend the Chrism Mass for the Archdiocese of Detroit. Because of COVID seating was restricted to one representative per parish. While it was strange to see so few people at the Cathedral, it was still a beautiful Mass. I didn’t take any pictures during the Mass, but snapped a few before it got started.
Today is the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, and our parish feast day. I think when many people hear the name of our parish they think it is “St. Mary, the Joyful.” Yet, the “Cause of Our Joy,” has nothing to do with how Mary was personally feeling, it a reference to the JOY that Mary brought to the world by saying “yes” to God’s request to bring Jesus into the world. If you have ever prayed the rosary you know the mysteries, which start with the Annunciation, walk us through the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and finally Glorious times in Mary’s life.
The Litany of Saint Joseph
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, hear us.
Christ, graciously hear us…
I wonder how many people watching sporting events see that guy holding the “John 3:16” sign and actually take the time to look up that passage? Today, this verse from John is part of our Gospel, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.”
In this weekend’s Gospel (Mk 1:40-45) Jesus tells the healed leper to say nothing about the miracle that was preformed. This seems strange at first because you would think Jesus would want everyone to know he was God incarnate, and share the Good News.
