In today’s Gospel (Mk 5:21-43) we hear about the wonderful miracle of Jesus saving Jairus’s daughter. What could be more wonderful than bringing a child back from death? When reading this passage again, the last line really struck me, Jesus “said that she should be given something to eat.” Even after saving her life, he also cared about her practical well being too. He fed her; like a friend, a father, a Good Shepherd, he did more than just “save” her.
Jesus cares, not only about the large things in our lives, but also the small mundane things. If we are going to live our lives modeled after Our Lord’s, we too should look for big and small ways to help our brothers and sisters. It is not enough to just “save” their lives, we also need to make sure they live in a world where they are fed. We need to make a world where people are safe.
I don’t think if we just have a “safe” world, where people are fed, that everyone will be saved. This isn’t true either. But why would we bring people back from death just to kill them slowly? We need a world where people don’t NEED to sin to survive. A world that people want to live. People may still choose to sin, but it should not be a requirement. I don’t know how to “feed” all of the people. I can work on taking care of the few people Jesus puts in front of me.
